Why Agave
Agave offers Australian agriculture a different kind of cropping opportunity. Its water-efficient physiology and ability to withstand dry conditions make it a promising candidate for land where rainfall can constrain conventional crop choices.
As a perennial crop with a life-cycle of up to 10 years, agave accumulates biomass over time and continues to increase yield until harvested. The opportunity is to turn that growth into useful feedstock while developing production systems suited to local conditions and farm operations.
Drought resilience, however, is only part of the story. Commercial performance depends on species selection, soils, rainfall, establishment care and management. Survival alone does not establish a viable crop.
ARA is launching AgaveLink™ to build the access, knowledge and support growers will need to assess their agave opportunity, including realistic expectations for inputs, productivity, harvest requirements and market access.
Grow Agave
Successful agave production begins with decisions made well before planting. Site suitability, plant quality, plantation layout and establishment practices all influence how a crop performs and what it will cost to manage.
AgaveLink™ will provide a coordinated approach to plant supply, agronomy and grower support. This exclusive grower program includes guidance on species selection, soil preparation, spacing, establishment protocols and access to future maintenance and harvesting services.
Our aim is to help growers develop plantations that suit their land, resources and commercial objectives. Research and field experience through AgaveLab™ inform that process. This ecosystem means that as our understanding grows, so does the knowledge of all AgaveLink™ members.
If you are considering agave, start a conversation with us about your property, intended planting area and goals. Together, we can identify the questions and next steps that matter.
Agave Markets
Agave’s commercial opportunity extends across several potential markets beyond the spirits that it is most well known for. In the bioeconomy, ARA is focused on developing renewable feedstock supply chains, including ethanol for low-carbon liquid fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuel through Alcohol-to-Jet pathways and energy through green hydrogen. Keeping a whole of plant product stack approach, ARA is also developing markets into biomass, livestock feed and other crop product applications that create additional value through waste-to-use circular economy.
For growers, these opportunities need to translate into practical arrangements. Product specifications, harvest timing, freight, processing capacity and buyer requirements all influence whether a supply chain can work commercially.
AgaveLink™ will connect members directly to downstream market opportunities, developed and secured for members by ARA. Our approach is to understand the intended end use alongside the production system, so planting decisions have a clear commercial context and growers are secured for sustainable, profitable outcomes.
